American Football... Great fun!

As you know I love being active and playing sport has always been a big part of my life together with training and working in the gym. A few years ago, when I was home visiting my family in Sweden one of my little brothers, David asked for some help gaining some muscle.

I was home for three months and in that period we succeeded to gain about 7 kg of muscle and he later joined a new started American Football Team, Karlshamn Oakleaves. Since then a few years has passed and David now weighs more than I. Sometimes I get the urge to pack on another 10 kg or so to feel big and strong but I guess there won't be much work for a 100 kg model. Things we do to our bodies, right?

David asked me if I was keen to give American Football a go. I could not resist. I have tried Australian Football and Rugby over the years but this was my first in the Grid Iron game.

I soon realized that I had a pretty good technique as I have been as active as I had been. I was training together with the running backs for about an hour before we got in to some full contact practize. I got told I was the "headhunter" which apparently meant that I would go for the ball... and of course the person who had the ball. Just my game:)

I had so much fun. I enjoyed that I once more was back in a team sport. I enjoyed the impact of the sport and even though I walked away with a fractured ribs and cut knees I think this is a sport I want to continue with... after my rib has healed that will say. I guess I learnt not to stand tall when someone tackles you. (At least I got the hit on photo)

Another benefit I can see with American Football is the obvious natural intervals. As you know I am a big fan of boxing for keeping lean. Maybe American Football is an option. I will look into it as soon as I get back to Sydney. If you know of any  clubs in the city... please let me know.

The boat is in the water

The last weekend I went done to the coast to help my dad put our small fishing boat in the sea. After a tough morning, cleaning and polishing the boat we finally got it ready for our first fishing trip for 2009.

During spring the highlight is the king salmon. It is rare to catch but if you are lucky there is the chance of catching salmon up to 30 kg in the southern of Sweden. I should add that I am still waiting on a catch like that.

The weather was beautiful so even though we did not catch any dinner I was happy to spend a couple on the sea. Hopefully I will have time to get back to the sea soon.

I grew up fishing and this has been one of the things I missed in Sydney. I know that the fishing around Sydney is supposed to be good but I have never got around to sending down my fishing equipment. As I return to Australia I will make sure to fish even in Sydney.

Surfing Progress - New Zealand

I have been trying to learn to surf for about 3 weeks. I must say that I do love my new found sport. Even though I wouldn’t count surfing as exercise I find it a great way to stay active, have fun and at the same time burn a few extra calories. I think having a broad sporting background have helped me pick it up rather quick and I have succeeded to catch a few nice waves.

As I had to go over to New Zealand for work I decided to bring my board over. Most people do not realize that you get another 5-10 kg of extra baggage allowance for sporting gear so it was no trouble. After my first couple of weeks of practice amongst many other surfers on Bondi beach I was thrilled to find that a lot of New Zealand beaches got plenty of space and as you can see on the photos you often keep a wave to yourself.

After my meetings I spent my weekend on a road-trip over the north island of New Zealand together with Camille. I succeeded to squeeze in three different beaches. Famous Raglan beach west of Hamilton where I used to live and the Pakiri Beach and Mount Manganui on the east coast. In true road-trip spirit we decided to take a chance and drive over to a beach which neither of us had been to before. We guessed the beach might have some surf. This is how we ended up in Pakiri beach. The photos you see are all taken at this beach. Sometimes you are better off not plan too much, especially on holidays.

In one moment of confidence I tried the board that I had my very first encounter with the surf on. Last time I tried my efforts more or less looked like a washing machine and even though I had great fun spending more time under the water than on top it was not very succeesfull. This time around I supprised myself to actually being able to catch a few waves on the board even if the board was only 6’2 and only the tip of the board was above water as I paddled for the waves.

Another step in the right direction. I did not get the chance to capture this moment on film but I hope it wasn't all beginners luck so I can repeat it once more.  I still got a free lesson at Let’s go Surfing in North Bondi as this came with the board I purschased. I will try to book that in the next  few weeks and I will return with an update.

A surfing Swede???

I have a slight tendency to get "addicted" to physical activities so when I borrowed my friends surfboard a few days ago I had a voice in the back of my head telling me that this could be something I liked.

I have always felt bad for not giving surfing a proper go.  I have lived in New Zealand for 3 years and in Sydney for almost 5 years. I went once in New Zealand during heavy swell on a 6' board.

I know the reason I never did that well had to do with the board and the conditions. At 95kg and 6'2 tall I spent the next 15 minutes trying to get out of the waves. Good fun, but not a success story. You can see the photo of me getting out of the surf in my image gallery under sport and adventure. The smile you see is not "yes i did it" more a "I am alive and on solid ground".

Now you might think, does this guy never learn? When it comes to sport... NO I don't and that is what makes it so much fun.

After playing around in Bondi on my friends 7' board I was hooked. I only had about 30 minutes in the water but the following day I went and purchased my first board, a 7' soft board that will be my entertainment for the summer.

I was hoping to get some images and videos up on the blog over the next few weeks to show my progression as a surfer. Today was my first go with my own board and I succeeded to catch a few quite nice waves so I am thrilled to see where I will be in a few weeks.

I will keep you posted. Exercise should be a lifestyle...

Boost your workouts.

Sometimes you keep looking for new things when all you need to do is to polish up your old habits. Todays blog entry is hopefully something that I will come back to now and then to give myself and you some inspiration to continue living a healthy lifestyle. To have more fun and to get fit(ter).

My first job in the fitness industry was a cycle instructor job in the local fitness centre. Being a teenager I actually didn't even know that the job was paid. I just liked the fact that I could teach and there was a whole bunch of pretty girls participating in the class.

A few months later I started to teach an girls boxing class for my boxing club. Once again, I did what I loved doing the most. Over the last 13 years I have taught both cycling and boxing on and off. Sometimes I think that it is the best activities in the world just to get bored and pick up something else. Somehow, I still keep coming back for more. Variation is the key.

For the moment I do boxing a couple times a week. Normally one day of technique/cardio and then another day sparring. Boxing a a great high intense sport that will get you fit real quick. You don't have to get into the fighting. You can enjoy a class with non contact boxing if that suits you better. Either way, I can promise that you will find muscles you didn't think you had and you will finish your workout drenched in sweat.... Awesome!

Today I decide to boost my workout with and visit a new gym. As I have clients in Manly I decided to visit Fightgym in Manly. This gym is one of the old-school boxing gyms. It got the the equipment that is needed but without the polished edges. That is the way I like it. If I wanted to train a boxing fitness class I could go to any of the commercial gyms and punch bags and pads. In my opinion you are better of finding yourself a true boxing gym. Here you normally get better technique with competitive boxers/trainers to teach you proper footwork. Boxing is more technique than strength. And of course a whole lot of fitness.

Todays session was a mix of technique, footwork and some light-contact sparring. 60 minutes later I was soaking in sweat. Time passed so quick when you are focused on a task. I rather do 2 hours of boxing that 1 hour on the cross trainer in the gym. At the same time I burn more calories and learn a skill at the same time.

If you are lucky to live in Manly, go and visit the fightgym website and maybe join a class or two. You will find them on ww.fightgym.com.au.  If you happen to live somewhere else, google your area and I am sure there is a local gym somewhere that will be able to push you through the paces.
